Week 3 – JOY

Day 15 – Joy Isn’t Found in Stuff

Scripture (NIV): Luke 12:15

“Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’”

Grinch Story Reflection:
The Grinch thought that if he could steal all the presents, food, and decorations, he could steal the Whos’ happiness. But when the Whos still sang for joy, he realized joy wasn’t something you could take.

Scripture Reflection:
Jesus reminds us that life isn’t about what we have—it’s about who we have. Joy doesn’t come from gifts or gadgets but from knowing God’s love never changes.

Family Activity & Question:
Have each person choose one possession they could give away to help someone else. Gather the items and plan to donate them together.
Ask: “Why does giving things away sometimes make us feel more joy?”

Day 16 – The Song in the Square

Scripture (NIV): Luke 2:10

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’”

Grinch Story Reflection:
The Whos stand in the square, singing together with empty hands but full hearts. Their song rises all the way up the mountain, where the Grinch is listening.

Scripture Reflection:
When Jesus was born, the angels brought good news of great joy for all people. That joy wasn’t just for shepherds or Whos—it’s for us too!

Family Activity & Question:
Play or sing your favorite Christmas carol together (bonus points for dancing!).
Ask: “What’s one thing that brings you joy about Jesus?”

Day 17 – Joy Despite Loss

Scripture (NIV): James 1:2–3

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Grinch Story Reflection:
Even when everything was gone, the Whos still had their voices, their community, and their joy. Their happiness didn’t depend on what they lost but on what they still had.

Scripture Reflection:
Sometimes life feels hard, but God can use our challenges to grow something strong and beautiful inside us. Joy doesn’t mean everything’s easy—it means we trust that God is working for good.

Family Activity & Question:
Make a “joy jar.” Write or draw things that bring you joy, big or small, and add one each day until Christmas.
Ask: “When has God helped you find joy in something hard?”

Day 18 – Cindy-Lou’s Joyful Faith

Scripture (NIV): Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Grinch Story Reflection:
Cindy-Lou Who shows gentle courage. She doesn’t yell at the Grinch or try to fight him. She believes love is stronger than anger—and her joy is contagious.

Scripture Reflection:
Paul prays that God will fill us with joy as we trust Him. When we have faith like Cindy-Lou, we overflow with hope and joy that spreads to others.

Family Activity & Question:
Use sticky notes to leave “joy messages” around your house—encouraging words, Bible verses, or drawings of joy.

Ask: “Who can we help feel joy this week?”

Day 19 – The Grinch Begins to Smile

Scripture (NIV): Psalm 30:11

“You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.”

Grinch Story Reflection:
As the Whos sing below, the Grinch’s frown begins to fade. Something new is happening—his heart is warming, and for the first time, he smiles.

Scripture Reflection:
God loves to trade our sadness for joy. He doesn’t just fix our faces—He changes our hearts. Advent joy comes when we let His love melt the cold places inside us.

Family Activity & Question:
Take “joy selfies” making your happiest or silliest faces. Then pray together, “God, thank You for the joy You give!”

Ask: “What makes your heart smile today?”

Day 20 – Overflowing Joy

Scripture (NIV): John 16:22

“So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”

Grinch Story Reflection:
The Grinch runs down the mountain not to steal, but to give. His joy overflows as he returns every gift. He can’t help but share it.

Scripture Reflection:
Jesus promised that even when life is difficult, joy will come again—and no one can take it away. When our hearts are full of His love, joy naturally spills out to others.

Family Activity & Question:
Make “joy cards” with bright colors and kind words. Deliver them secretly to friends, neighbors, or teachers.
Ask: “What’s something we can do this week to spread joy?”

Day 21 – Rejoice Always

Scripture (NIV): 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Grinch Story Reflection:
At the end of the story, the Grinch is at the table with everyone, carving the roast beast. What began with loneliness ends in laughter, music, and joy shared together.

Scripture Reflection:
Paul’s words remind us that joy isn’t just a feeling—it’s a choice. We can rejoice, pray, and give thanks because Jesus is always with us.

Family Activity & Question:
Grab paper and markers and make a “Joy List.” Write or draw things you’re thankful for—people, memories, songs, anything!
Ask: “What’s one thing we can thank God for right now?”
away this Christmas?”
